Sedation Dentistry

Are you feeling nervous, worried, or terrified at the thought of your next dental visit?

Are you afraid that your next dental treatment will feel uncomfortable or even hurt? We’re here to tell you that this worry and fear can be managed thanks to dental sedation and local anesthesia. Dental sedation is a treatment option for those who want ease and comfort during their procedures. This revolutionary service makes getting a root canal, tooth extraction, and oral surgery stress-free and more comfortable.

At Smile Lounge, Dr. Tommy Song and Dr. Joon Cho are experienced professionals that offer sedation dentistry to help patients get through dental appointments with little (to no) anxiety or discomfort. Most patients can benefit from sedation dentistry in different ways. At our Frisco dental office, sedation dentistry is available to our patients, including local anesthesia, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral, IV sedation, and general anesthesia.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a chemical compound of two gasses found heavily in our atmosphere: nitrogen and oxygen. At room temperature, nitrous oxide is a colorless gas with a slightly sweet-smelling odor and taste. When inhaled, nitrous oxide leads individuals to a state of euphoria, great happiness, and well-being.

Nitrous oxide is the least potent sedation dentistry option that we offer and is ideal for those who want to pick up right where they left off after their dental appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Our sedation dentists offer oral conscious sedation as a prescription medicine before dental treatment. Typically, oral conscious sedation drugs make patients feel drowsy or sleepy (which is why it’s nicknamed “sleep dentistry”) but still able to respond to simple commands.

Oral-conscious dental sedation is ideal for those with mild to moderate anxiety levels and short to medium-length appointments. Additionally, oral conscious sedation can help those with severe gag reflexes by momentarily relaxing the muscles in the throat and mouth.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is administered directly to the bloodstream through an intravenous drip, and the effects are almost instant. Typically, patients can respond and interact under IV sedation but might experience temporary amnesia. IV sedation dentistry is ideal for those undergoing extensive procedures.

General Anesthesia

General Anesthesia is the deepest form of sedation and anesthesia that we offer and leaves patients deeply sedated and unable to feel pain during dental treatments. Typically, we offer general anesthesia for those undergoing oral surgery, multiple treatments, and severe anxiety.
