Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Gentle Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth extraction is a surgical dental procedure we do frequently here at Smile Lounge, in Frisco, TX. Often, it is important to remove one or more of the third molars, also known as the wisdom teeth. They got their name as “wisdom teeth” because they usually emerge out of the gums during the late teenage years or early twenties when people are thought to be more mature and “wise”.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to be Removed?

Wisdom teeth may need to be removed (a.k.a. extracted) for several reasons.

  • They are Impacted: Probably the most common reason wisdom teeth are removed is because they are stuck (a.k.a. impacted) in the wrong position. Impacted wisdom teeth will not come through the gum line fully if they are misaligned or there is not enough space. This will typically cause severe pain, headaches, possibly infection, damage to neighboring teeth, and irregularities to one’s bite.
  • They May Crowd Other Teeth: The human jaw has gradually changed over the centuries as our diets evolved. The human jaw is much smaller than our ancestors but we still have wisdom teeth and their presence can cause crowding in the mouth. This can lead to misalignment of the other teeth and may require extraction to prevent further dental issues.
  • They Can Cause Infection: Since they are located at the back of the mouth, wisdom teeth can be difficult to clean properly and fully. This increases their risk for cavities and gum infections or deeper infections.
  • They Will Damage Nearby Teeth: Wisdom teeth that are not coming in correctly will put pressure on surrounding teeth, causing damage which can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and shifting of adjacent teeth.
  • They Can Lead to Cysts or Tumors: In some extreme cases, impacted wisdom teeth will cause cysts or tumors to develop underneath the gums, which can cause damage to the jawbone and other teeth. Removing the impacted wisdom teeth can help prevent these complications.
